Police Arrest Woman Accused of Wallet Theft

The woman whose image was posted on the department's Facebook page has been charged with grand theft

Mentor Police have arrested the woman accused of stealing a wallet at a local grocer and credit the department's Facebook fans for their help.

According to The News-Herald, police arrested 69-year-old Mentor resident Judith Warix on Monday. Tips from Facebook users prompted police to ask to speak with Warix, who later came to the police department.

The wallet was taken from Mentor Family Foods. Earlier this month, the police department posted three surveillance photos of Warix on its Facebook page.

Mentor Police Lt. Tim Allen told the newspaper that Warix admitted to taking the wallet, but only did so because she thought it belonged to her husband. She said she threw it away once she found it out was not his.

The wallet contained $285 in cash, a driver's license, credit cards from Chase Bank and Sears. Police charged Warix with grand theft, a fifth-degree felony.

Warix could spend up to a year in prison if convicted. Her preliminary hearing will be at 8 a.m. May 23 at Mentor Municipal Court.
