The cold and snow doesn't have to stop the fun

Why Go: In honor of National Skating Month, the Mentor ice arena will host Mentor Skate Day, which will include free lessons, free skate rental, a skating exhibition, open skating and prizes.

Where/When: , 7 p.m. Monday

Why Go: The show will feature comedy and impressions from Frank Krupa and the song stylings of Johnny Fontane. Krupa and Fontane previously premiered their Vegas-style act at Mentor Senior Center.

Pricing: Free, but the library asks that you register for the show beforehand. That can be done online or by calling librarian Barbara Hauer at 255-8811, ext. 210.

Where/When: Mentor Public Library Main Branch, noon, Wednesday

Why Go: and have paired for a series of lunchtime talks by park staff and volunteers on the major battles of the Civil War.

The series kicks off at noon Jan. 11 with "The Battle of Middle Creek."

The Battle of Middle Creek occurred on Jan. 10, 1862 in eastern Kentucky. It was the first battle in which Colonel James A. Garfield and his regiment, the 42nd Ohio, saw action.

Where/When: Mentor Beach Park, Saturday 9 a.m.

Why Go: Look for gently used sports gear at the city's first ever Sports Swap. This is a great opportunity if you're kid keeps outgrowing his or her sports gear.

Where/When: Sledding Hill at 8350 Carpenter Drive, daylight hours

Why Go: We might as well make the best of this snow. Grab a sled and have some fun!
