United Way, City of Mentor Host Snowy Golf Tournament

The annual Lake County Chili Open is one of the rare outdoor events that becomes more popular when it snows.

So make sure you get your tickets now before it sells out.

More than 200 golfers come out each year to play winter golf at Black Brook Golf Course.

They swing through a course of nine snowy holes -- driving over snowdrifts and putting on frozen greens -- that range from 65 to 100 yards in length.

They play with neon orange balls. That way, they don't get lost in the snow.

Afterward, they warm up in the clubhouse with a big bowl of chili.

Black Brook clears tee areas and greens, but golfers have to hack through the snow anywhere else on the course.

If the course is not covered with snow on Jan. 26, golfers can play the normal yardage (so bring your whole set of clubs, just in case.)

Money from the event goes to the United Way of Lake County.

In its eight-year history, the Chili Open has made $10,000 for the local chapter of the United Way.

Prizes will be awarded in men’s, women’s and junior’s divisions.

The cost to enter the Chili Open is $18, which includes golf fees, chili, prizes and more.
