Newark's home court program offers hope and second chances (abc6onyourside.com) — Newark’s volunteer-run Home Court program is giving homeless residents facing nonviolent misdemeanors a path to housing and cleared records instead of traditional prosecution. Nearly 20 people have already secured housing through this no-cost, community-partner effort, which pairs strict accountability with treatment, support services, and a genuine second chance for some of the city’s most vulnerable neighbors.
   

2. Kindhearted Ohio Man Adopts Nine Senior Dogs to Give Them a Good Life For the Rest of Their Days (laughingsquid.com) — A Newark resident, Steve Greig, has turned his home into a haven for senior animals, currently caring for nine adopted senior dogs and many other rescued creatures. Over 13 years he has saved more than 40 older animals from euthanasia, shelters, and puppy mills, earning national recognition with the ASPCA Citizen Hero Award in 2025.
   

3. The Buckeye Institute Argues Its Case Seeking to Overturn Federal Ban on Home Distilling (buckeyeinstitute.org) — A Newark small-business owner is at the center of a major constitutional challenge as The Buckeye Institute argues in federal court to overturn the nationwide ban on home distilling. John Ream, co-owner of Trek Brewing Company in Newark, hopes to legally distill small amounts of spirits at home for personal use, a step currently blocked by federal law carrying steep penalties.
   

4. Granting Possibility (owu.edu) — Ohio Wesleyan University has awarded over $67,000 in OWU Connection grants, including support for a project involving sophomore Keira Russell of Newark who will study first-generation college experiences in the Czech Republic. The funded projects range from brain research and AI-driven textile sorting to veterinary work in Panama and cultural studies in Costa Rica and Europe, giving Ohio students hands-on global learning opportunities.
