1. Riverside School Board plans Rateno hearing, hires interim superintendent (news-herald.com) — Riverside families should know the school board has scheduled suspended Superintendent Chris Rateno’s termination hearing for Jan. 4 at the Riverside School Board Conference Room in Painesville Township and hired Robert Scott as interim superintendent. Scott, working through the Educational Service Center of the Western Reserve, will oversee day-to-day operations but won’t make long-term decisions while the board searches for permanent leadership. 
2. 23-year-old guilty of killing his father in Painesville (news-herald.com) — A 23-year-old Painesville resident has been found guilty of murdering his 67-year-old father after a 2024 shooting inside their Sanford Street home. The conviction followed a bench trial in Lake County Common Pleas Court, after Painesville police, city fire crews, the county coroner, and state investigators responded to the late-night incident.
3. Education over enforcement: Lake Co. Narcotics Agency helps navigate laws surrounding CBD, Hemp products (news5cleveland.com) — Based out of Painesville, the Lake County Narcotics Agency is visiting local gas stations, convenience stores, and vape shops to explain which CBD, hemp, and Kratom products are legal in Ohio. Lt. Brad Kemp says the focus is on educating business owners first, then enforcing the law only if violations continue.
4. 2 big winning Powerball tickets bought in Ohio — but jackpot still up for grabs (fox8.com) — Someone who bought a Powerball ticket at the Painesville Giant Eagle on Mentor Avenue just won $100,000, though the prize hasn’t been claimed yet. Another Ohio winner bought a ticket in Columbus, and the massive $1.1 billion jackpot is still up for grabs in the next drawing.
