Discolored Water No Cause For Alarm

Water from the taps in the eastern suburbs may look a little discolored today, but the Cleveland Division of Water says it's safe to consume.

The discoloration is due to manganese, which is a natural-occurring element in Lake Erie, the source of the water supply, a water division media release said Friday.

Higher than normal levels of manganese on Thursday entered the division's Nottingham Treatment Plant, which serves a number of eastern suburbs, including Shaker Heights, Cleveland Heights, Beachwood and Mayfield Heights.

As a result, the water has a yellowish color. Water officials said residents should avoid doing laundry, especially lighter-colored clothes, which could get stained.

Crews are working to flush the system. Officials expect the water to clear up in a few days. Other steps also are being taken to minimize the impact of the manganese.

The water division said the amount of manganese allowed in drinking water is not regulated.
