The Class of 2012 will walk the stage to receive diplomas in a ticketed ceremony at 6 p.m. tonight at the State Theater in Cleveland.
This year's group of diploma recipients:
- is Shaker’s 95th graduating class (the first class had just one graduate, Beatrice Wall);
- won more than $3 million in scholarships;
- donated more than 13,500 collective hours of community service;
- has 58 Advanced Placement Scholars so far (more expected when May AP test results are in);
- has one National Achievement Scholarship winner and three National Achievement semifinalists;
- has four National Merit Scholarship winners, 10 National Merit semifinalists, and 22 National Merit Commended Scholars;
- has three National Hispanic Scholars -- Â which sets a school record;
- has one Gates Millennium Scholar, one Coca-Cola Scholar, and one A.B. Duke Scholar;
- has been admitted to more than 130 colleges, including all the Ivy League schools; state-supported schools in Ohio; flagship universities in Michigan, Wisconsin, and North Carolina; and other highly selective private colleges and universities;
- has an average SAT composite score of 1853, compared to the national average of 1500. A perfect SAT score is 2400;
- includes 25 students who are Shaker’s first graduating cohort of International Baccalaureate Diploma candidates;
- includes 97-year-old Anna Lupica, who received her diploma in a private ceremony in the library at Shaker Heights High School on Wednesday. Lupica had to drop out of Shaker Heights High School during the Depression to assist her family by helping to run her father's butcher shop. Lupica's brand-new diploma is dated 1934, the year she would have graduated.
