Deadly I-480 Crash: Ohio Man Loses Control Of Car, Hits Trailer

A 65-year-old man lost control of his car, the Ohio State Highway Patrol announced, and was hit by a semi-tractor trailer.

GARFIELD HEIGHTS, OH — A 65-year-old man was killed when he lost control of his car on I-480 and was struck by a semi-tractor trailer.

The crash happened at 2 p.m. on Thursday, the Ohio State Highway Patrol announced. The driver was James Hess, 65, from Garfield Heights.

Hess was going west on I-480 and was just about to go over the Valley View Bridge when he lost control of his Honda Civic. After Hess' car was hit by the tractor trailer, the Civic rolled into the median and hit the concrete divider, the Highway Patrol said.

Hess was wearing his seat belt but still died as a result of the crash, the Highway Patrol said. The driver of the tractor trailer was not hurt.

It's not yet clear what caused Hess to lose control of his car or what his condition prior to the crash was, the Patrol said. Investigation into the incident continues.

I-480 west was closed for approximately 150 minutes while crews investigated and then cleared the accident, the Highway Patrol said.
