📰 News we're reading

1. WELCOME BACK! Students & staff return to Solon elementary school following months-long asbestos closure (news5cleveland.com) — Roxbury Elementary students and staff are finally back in their Solon classrooms after nearly four months at Parkside Church due to asbestos found in the building. Extensive abatement, reconstruction, and testing have been completed, with Cuyahoga County Board of Health clearing the school to reopen. Families can expect refreshed classrooms, new ceilings and lighting, and ongoing monitoring from district experts.

2. Finding for Recovery Issued Against Solon Part-Time Employee Who Was Improperly Compensated by City and County for Same Working Hours (einpresswire.com) — State auditors found a part-time program coordinator for Solon’s recreation department was improperly paid about $2,465 for hours that overlapped with her full-time county job, and issued a formal finding for recovery. The case stems from a 2024 audit of Solon’s finances after city HR flagged unusual timesheets, underscoring ongoing scrutiny of how local tax dollars are spent.

3. ‘Reckless' boy crashes car in parking lot: Bainbridge Township Police Blotter (cleveland.com) — Police say a 17-year-old Solon resident crashed into a utility pole while allegedly doing stunts in the icy parking lot of Parkside Church in Bainbridge, and he was cited for driving without a license and reckless operation. The same Bainbridge police blotter details two separate retail theft cases at Ulta and Walmart and a three-car crash that left a teen with minor injuries.

4. This is how sharply home prices are up since COVID-19 across Cuyahoga County (cleveland.com) — Solon home prices have surged from a $290,000 median in 2019 to $448,500 in 2025, making it one of Cuyahoga County’s three priciest cities. A new countywide analysis shows similar sharp gains across many suburbs, with lower-priced areas seeing some of the biggest percentage jumps and affordability increasingly strained compared with local wages.

5. Orange council puts reappointment of Stephen Byron as law director on hold (cleveland.com) — A recent water main break in Solon disrupted service for both Solon and Orange residents, but Cleveland Water is still tracking down the cause of recurring pressure drops. Orange Village Council also delayed reappointing its longtime law director, discussed joining Solon and others in a new First CALL mental health response program, and reviewed plans for new housing at Pinecrest.
