Techtron's Move: Solon's Gain Is Mayfield's Loss
While Solon is gaining more than 100 jobs, Mayfield Village is losing 62 jobs when the company moves

Techtron Systems will be leaving its location at 760 Beta Drive in  and later this year.
The company has 62 employees and plans to add another 105 by 2014 at its new location in a 70,000-square-foot building at 29500 Fountain Parkway in Solon. Mayfield Village Development Director Ted Esborn said Techtron Systems has been growing in recent years, as shown by an increase in income taxes paid to the village from $37,000 in 2006 to $62,000 in 2010.
Esborn said he would have liked the opportunity to convince the company to stay in Mayfield Village, but the decision was made before he was contacted.
"They called about a month ago and they said it's happening. It was more of a courtesy call," he said. "They didn't threaten to leave, they were leaving."
Esborn said Techtron Systems is a detailed electronics manufacturer and occupies about 41,000 square feet in the Beta Drive building. He said it was difficult to find a facility the right size nearby.
"We floated some ideas by them on the theory that we might be able to get them to stay," Esborn said. One nearby option was a 198,000-square-foot building, but he said that was too much space and the company wasn't interested in occupying part of the building.
Esborn said he is working with the building owner to find a new tenant for the space being vacated by Techtron Systems.
"It's a pleasant surprise that they're looking to grow that much," Esborn said about Techtron Systems.
According to an agreement with the city of Solon, Techtron Systems is expected to create 75 jobs in 2011 and 2012, 20 more in 2013 and 10 in 2014. The company will receive up to $48,000 annually in grant money from the city of Solon, based on creating new payroll and jobs.
Solon has been on the bad side of such deals before, and recently. recently announced its moving to China and is leaving for Georgia.Â
