A report said the crash took place about 7:10 p.m. when the vehicle failed to negotiate a curve on Fair Road and slammed into mailboxes and a tree.

Detective Lt. John Janowski said the driver apparently was trying to flee from Berea police, although a Berea officer said there was no pursuit.

The driver passed a Berea cruiser and sped up, Janowski said.

Traveling at a high rate of speed, the car went straight where Fair Road bends just east of Prospect Road, leaving the road and striking a number of objects before the major impact into a tree, he said.

The driver, who remained at MetroHealth Medical Center early this week, will face charges in the incident.
