Here are the top three stories today in Strongsville:
- Prosecutors in Ohio have charged almost a dozen current or former officers in the East Cleveland Police Department with felonious assault and violation of civil rights. Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley said that 16 current or former officers have now been indicted on charges of unlawful conduct in the last six and a half months. The incidents of the alleged misconduct occurred before the appointment of a new police chief last fall, and the prosecutors have played videos showing officers punching or kicking people or repeatedly using stun devices. - Mayor Tom Perciak will give his annual State of the City speech on Mar. 21 as part of the Strongsville Chamber of Commerce's business luncheon. Reservations are required for attendance, which can be made online or by calling (440) 238-3366. (The City of Strongsville)
- The Northeast Ohio Public Energy Council (NOPEC) has awarded a $119,834 grant to Strongsville to support the city's town center redesign project, bringing the total amount raised for the $7 million Strongsville Town Center Enhancement & Walkability Initiative to $4.7 million. Strongsville will use the grant to pay for energy-efficient lighting and green building materials in the town center, while the design work is still wrapping up and the city is yet to announce an updated construction time frame. NOPEC's Energized Community program provides energy-related project funding, such as traffic signal improvements, insulation installation, and solar-powered stop signs. (Subscription: cleveland.com)
