STRONGSVILLE, OH — Rep. Anthony Gonzalez won't seek re-election, citing the toxic elements within the Republican party and his own desire to spend more time with his family.

Gonzalez released a statement Thursday declaring this his final term in office. He opened by thanking supporters and his family before jabbing at the current state of politics.

"While my desire to build a fuller family life is at the heart of my decision, it is also true that the current state of our politics, especially many of the toxic elements inside our own party, is a significant factor in my decision," he said.

"The President of the United States helped organize and incite a mob that attacked the United States Congress in an attempt to prevent us from completing our solemn duties as prescribed by the Constitution," Gonzalez said in a statement after the House vote.

The vote meant Gonzalez broke ranks with much of the Republican party and exposed him to attacks from Trump's more vitriolic supporters. The former president lambasted Gonzalez and support was building for a primary challenger to emerge against the representative.
