Truck Crashes and Burns on Turnpike in Strongsville

A truck carrying cans of Pepsi crashed into a barrier wall on the Ohio Turnpike early Wednesday morning and burst in to flames.

The Strongsville fire department got the first 911 call at 5:12 a.m. and arrived on scene 12 minutes later to find the truck fully involved.

Ten Strongsville firefighters on a rescue squad, two fire engines and a command vehicle responded to the call.

Broadview Heights and North Royalton fire departments also supplied water and manpower.

The Ohio EPA was notified for diesel fuel that had leaked onto the ground from the fire.

The initial fire attack was made by Strongsville fire units from the water supply carried on their fire trucks, Assistant Fire Chief Jack Draves said. A permanent water supply was established by North Royalton Fire Department by hand-laying several hundred feet of hose from Royalton Road.  

The fire continued to burn until the diesel fuel from the truck could be extinguished, Draves said. 

The blaze was under control in approximately 30 minutes.  Rich’s Towing Service used two wrecker trucks to pull the debris apart so that all remaining fire could be extinguished.  

Skelly Construction was a major contributor in mitigating the incident, according to Draves. There were no reported injuries.  The truck was a total loss.
