Time Running Out to Get Rid of Hazardous Waste
Westlake Household Hazardous Waste Round-Up ends Saturday

Are you spring-cleaning your garage? Then your timing is excellent.
You've got Friday and Saturday to dispose of certain things that can't go in the trash as the wraps up its Hazardous Household Waste Round-Up.
Collection will be held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, and 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday at the Service Center, located at 741 Basset Road.

Maureen Kelly of the Service Department said Thursday that 5.57 tons of waste were collected in the 2011 round-ups.
The round-up is for Westlake residents only. Businesses, churches and other local organizations cannot drop off items.

What can you drop off? Here's a list:
- Paint-related products (liquid or aerosol): Oil- or solvent-based paint, paint thinner, sealers, primer, coatings, varnish, turpentine, spray paint, polyurethane, shellac.
- Pesticides: Herbicides, insecticides, pest/rodent killer, fungicides.
- Miscellaneous: Caustic household products (muratic acid, oven cleaner, drain opener), motor oil and other car fluids, car batteries, driveway sealer, adhesives, roof tar, fluorescent light bulbs, mercury, gasoline, kerosene, lighter fluid.
Here's what's not being accepted:
- Latex paint
- Electronics
- Tires
- Explosives, gun powder, ammunition, flares
- Medical waste, medications
- Radioactive waste such as smoke detectors
- Appliances
