Westlake Man Crashes SUV, Hospitalized After Police Chase

38-year-old Westlake man remains hospitalized after SUV goes airborne, crashes.

A 38-year-old Westlake man was hospitalized after fleeing from police just after midnight on March 7.

Corey Schoenberger of Westlake was observed driving in and out of parking lots in the Crocker Road area at 12:07 a.m. Thursday morning. After committing a number of moving violations, he was signaled to stop by a Westlake police officer; he instead fled westbound on Clemens Road and then northbound on Bradley Road into Bay Village, becoming airborne when crossing the railroad tracks. At the intersection with Lake Road, he failed to negotiate a left turn and hit a fence and tree.

Schoenberger was taken to St. John Medical Center by the Bay Village Fire Department. He remains under observation today. Westlake Police Capt. Guy Turner said his injuries are not considered life-threatening

Schoenberger is not currently under arrest; Turner said any charges will come from the county prosecutor.

A temporary license plate stolen on March 6 from an Elyria womanโ€™s 1994 Ford SUV was found on the 1994 Ford SUV that Schoenberger was driving. Items in that vehicle have tentatively been linked to a theft from auto reported at a hotel in the area where Schoenberger was first spotted. A search warrant is being sought to recover more suspected stolen property from Schoenbergerโ€™s vehicle.

Suggested charges that will be considered by the Cuyahoga County prosecutor for presentation to a grand jury will include traffic violations, receiving stolen property and felony fleeing.ย ย  ย ย
