From Westlake HS: Westlake High School is hosting the English Speaking Union’s High School Shakespeare Competition on Feb. 25.
The competition began in New York City schools in 1983 and grew to a national program that helped 300,000 high school students develop their understanding of Shakespeare.
The competition is designed to develop speaking skills, critical thinking strategies, and overall appreciation of literature in high school students. About 200 students from 25 Northeast Ohio schools will read, analyze and recite Shakespeare monologues and sonnets.
The competition will be held Feb. 25 from 8:30am to 1pm in the Westlake Schools Performing Arts Center. The winner of the Cleveland Branch competition advances to the national competition in New York City in April. WHS English teacher Ann Hasenohrl is organizing this regional event.
