Tulsa is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Tulsa has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.

A few things to know:

  • Tulsa is known as the "Oil Capital of the World" due to its rich history in the oil industry. The city is home to the Philbrook Museum of Art, a former oil magnate's villa-turned-museum that showcases an impressive collection of art and artifacts. Visitors can also take a tour of the historic Oil Capital Historic District to learn more about Tulsa's oil boom era.
  • Did you know that Tulsa has a connection to the iconic Route 66? The Mother Road runs through the city and visitors can stop at some of the original diners and motels that have been preserved along the route. The Cyrus Avery Centennial Plaza is also a must-see for Route 66 enthusiasts, featuring a giant map of the route and a sculpture of Cyrus Avery, the "Father of Route 66."
  • Tulsa has a fascinating history with the music industry, with notable musicians like Leon Russell, Bob Wills and Woody Guthrie all living in and around the city. The Woody Guthrie Center, located in downtown Tulsa, is a must-visit for music fans, featuring exhibits and artifacts related to Guthrie's life and music.
  • Tulsa also has a connection to the film industry. The city has been the backdrop for numerous films and TV shows, including "The Outsiders." Visitors can even take a self-guided tour of filming locations around the city, like the iconic Admiral Twin Drive-In.
  • Looking for some outdoor fun? Tulsa has plenty of parks and green spaces to explore. Mohawk Park is the city's largest park, featuring a zoo, golf course and plenty of walking trails. The Turkey Mountain Urban Wilderness Area is another great option for outdoor enthusiasts, with over 600 acres of hiking and biking trails.
