Oregon Horse Sanctuary At Risk Of Closing; Owners Ask For Funding

Oregon Horse Rescue has saved more than 100 horses over the course of five years, but now the farm could close.

EUGENE, OR -- Oregon Horse Rescue has saved more than 100 horses over the course of five years, but now the farm could close. In December, the owners of the sanctuary called on the public to donate money to help the farm stay open.

The nonprofit was opened in 2012 by David and Jane Kelly. Since its opening, they've rescued more than 100 horses.

In a Facebook post, the Kellys said they could close by March 1.

"We urge the community to come together and for donors to step up to help support the rescue, to avoid closure," the Facebook post read. "We love our donors, but the reality is that in the best year, public donors have contributed only 10% of our expenses. OHR has never pushed for public donations in the past, but things change, and we now need your help."

The Register-Guard reported the nonprofit "raised and spent about $330,000" in 2016.

"Kelly said he and his wife pay 90 percent of the sanctuary’s annual operating bills, with donations covering roughly 10 percent," the newspaper reported.
