20-Acre Brush Fire Quickly Contained In Beaverton

Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue crews got control of the South Cooper Mountain fire within 90 minutes, officials said. No cause found yet.

BEAVERTON, OR — Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue investigators have not yet determined the cause of a field fire that sparked up in the South Cooper Mountain area Tuesday afternoon, which ultimately burned nearly 20 acres.

TVF&R firefighters were dispatched from the Cooper Mountain fire station just before 3:30 p.m. Aug. 21 to a recently-cut hay field off Southwest Horse Tale Drive, between Southwest 175th Avenue and Southwest Tile Flat Road. And even though fire crews arrived within minutes of the call, they still arrived to find multiple acres already blazing.

Shifting winds and dry vegetation reportedly helped fuel the fire and spread it quickly across the hay field. Because of how rapidly it was growing — even just since the call was made — TVF&R officials upgraded the fire to "first alarm" and brought in more firefighting resources.

Water tenders and brush rigs were used to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to other nearby fields or structures, officials said.

Fire crews got control of the blaze within about an hour and a half, but not before it grew to nearly 20 acres. Yet no structures were damaged and no injuries were reported.
