A refuge from the cold temperatures is now available in Beaverton.

The city of Beaverton opened a severe weather shelter Thursday for those who are homeless and seeking refuge from extreme temperatures.

The shelter is located in the Beaverton Community Center at 12350 SW 5th St.

Regular shelter hours will start on Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. and end on Fridays 6:30 a.m. from Jan. 12 to March 30. It will open on additional evenings when the temperature is projected to dip below freezing for more than 48 hours.

"With the opening of the Beaverton shelter, the gap in the Washington County coordinated shelter system is complete, with shelter space throughout the county every night of the week," said a news release.

The shelter will be operated by the local nonprofit organization, Just Compassion. Opening a severe weather shelter in the city was a top priority for Mayor Denny Doyle and the Beaverton City Council, the release said.
