📰 News we're reading

1. Beaverton state championship hero named boys soccer player of the year (oregonlive.com) — Beaverton High’s boys soccer team leaned on junior defender Cal Spear, who scored both the equalizer and the decisive penalty in their Class 6A state championship win over Grant. Spear anchored one of Oregon’s stingiest defenses, helping the Beavers allow just nine goals all season and earn recognition as player of the year.

2. Deadstock Coffee Stepping Out of Old Town (wweek.com) — Deadstock Coffee’s original Old Town Portland shop is closing Dec. 31, but its newer Beaverton location on SW Broadway remains part of the brand’s future. Owner Ian Williams says the closure is a chance to regroup, with former baristas and drink specials planned as a celebration through year’s end rather than a farewell.

3. In Beaverton schools, tracking absenteeism — and the impacts of the immigration crackdown — in real time (oregonlive.com) — Families in the Beaverton School District now have leaders tracking attendance in near real time, as a new dashboard helps schools quickly spot and respond to absenteeism spikes tied partly to immigration enforcement. The tool highlights which student groups are missing class, guides targeted support, and is inspiring a push for statewide, more frequent reporting of attendance data.

4. Popular Science Fiction Author Dead at 78: RIP to John Varley (suggest.com) — Beaverton readers are mourning acclaimed science fiction author John Varley, who died December 10 at his home in the city at age 78. The Texas-born, multi-award-winning writer of the Eight Worlds stories had faced serious health and financial struggles in recent years, including major heart surgery, COPD, and diabetes, but remained deeply appreciative of the medical staff who cared for him.
