  1. A Beaverton student's farming innovation is getting lots of big-time attention. Sahasra Swargam's invention, a system of sensors that monitor soil temperature, moisture and pH levels, was named a national top-10 finalist in the 3M Young Scientist Challenge. Swargam finished up 8th grade at Stoller Middle School last June. She's taking her invention to the contest finals in Minneapolis in mid-October. (Fox 12 Oregon)
  2. Visit Old Town Beaverton's Flora bar with FOX 12′s Ayo Elise. The speakeasy-style drinkery above Loyal Legion serves upscale cocktails by reservation only. Bar manager Tiana Stewart, a Beaverton local who sojourned in Los Angeles for a few years to level up her mixology skills, talks about her inspirations and drink recommendations in the segment. (Fox 12 Oregon)
  3. A local media outlet earned accolades recently. The Times of Beaverton, Tigard, Tualatin & Sherwood earned an award for General Excellence in the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association's Better Newspaper Contest, competing against other newspapers of its size throughout the state. Writers from the publication, Courtney Vaughn, Gabby Urenda and Kelcie Grega, along with Editor-in-Chief Mark Miller, also received awards in the July 29 decision. (Pamplin Media Group)
  4. Read the reflections of a Beaverton student who is participating in the High School Journalism Institute, a weeklong journalism course hosted by Oregon State University, via OregonLive. Suzan Nuri, who attends the Beaverton Early College High School, explored the campus, dabbled in photojournalism and studied the art of the profile during the first few days of the intensive.
  5. Access to Oswego Lake has been a topic of contention lately. Now, the entity that manages the lake, called the Lake Corporation, is seeking nullification of the ruling to allow public access to the body of water. The Lake Corporation contends that because the judge involved in the ruling had personal interest in the matter and was removed from the case, the ruling should be overturned. A hearing on whether the nullification will proceed is scheduled for September 19. (Portland Tribune)
