Here are the top stories today in Beaverton:

  1. School resource officer (SRO) is a contentious position these days in many districts, Beaverton School District included. A recent survey sponsored by the City of Beaverton and BSD discovered the general thoughts of staff, students and parents on the matter. Based on over 8,700 responses, the survey determined that less than half of students support SROs in schools, with under 20% actively opposing SROs. Click over to the BSD website to view the entire 120-page report in its entirety. Despite the findings, BSD reps say they're going to keep SROs in schools, at least for the start of the next school year. (KGW.com)
  2. The monkeypox outbreak has been making many folks nervous lately, but that anxiety is causing a Tualatin man extra inconvenience. Jose Torres suffers from neurofibromatosis (NF-1), which causes small benign tumors that some mistake for symptoms of the monkeypox virus. Torres says he's been confronted about his genetic condition throughout his life, and increasingly so since the monkeypox outbreak. Get educated about NF-1 in an interview with Torres at KPTV.com.
  3. And here's more info on Portland Cider Co.'s Westside Pub, set to open today, courtesy of Andi Prewitt at Willamette Week. The interior features a design inspired by a European beer hall, along with roll-up doors to expand the space when the weather is fine. The pub, which is the brand's third, is a response to the energy surrounding Beaverton these days: "Beaverton is a really exciting place to be right now, with so many new restaurants and breweries opening up, and fostering community is a core part of our mission," Portland Cider Co. co-owner Lynda Parrish said about the expansion into the Westside.
  4. Hillsboro Police want the community to be aware of a new scam on the loose. Scammers use a local number to call unsuspecting residents, claiming there's a warrant for their arrest. The scammer will demand money from the victim, saying payment will prevent action on the "warrant." Hillsboro Police says: "Be advised, you will never be contacted by Hillsboro Police Department and told to pay any amount of money for any reason." (Facebook.com)
  5. A local political influencer group has a new leader, reports Troy Shinn. Elizabeth Mazzara Myers took the helm of the Westside Business Alliance (WEA) earlier this month. The WEA is a Tigard-based business advocacy group, and Myers says that her goal is to 'target investments that center on equity.' Myers is the former chief of staff for Washington County Chair Kathryn Harrington. (Portland Tribune)

From my notebook:

  • Hey! We Oregonians are accustomed to rain... but rain after a dry spell (which can create slick conditions on roadways) can often catch us off guard. Since rain was predicted for Tuesday night/Wednesday morning, don't forget to proceed with a bit of caution when you hit the road this morning! (Twitter)
  • And here's a friendly reminder that At The Garages may have abandoned Beaverton for Lake Oswego, but the venue is still one of the best spots on the Westside to hear live music almost every night of the week — plus, they offer great beer and food! (Instagram)

Now you're in the loop and ready to head out the door on this Wednesday. I'm off to revisit Garrison Keillor's "The Lives of English Majors." I'll see you around!
