Here are the top five stories in Beaverton today:
- An Aloha man had an unexpected visitor on Sunday, Matt Rawlings reports. Investigators say a woman crashed into two cars, then fled into a nearby home. Police were able to locate the suspect a little over an hour later after a resident reported that an unknown person might be hiding in his house on Southwest Trelane Street. The suspect, identified as Melissa Valdez, 32, was arrested that evening. (KOIN.com)
- A lithium battery is thought to be the cause of a house fire in Hillsboro early Monday morning. Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze and help two residents along with a pet to safety. One of the residents, Kevin Doherty, said he believes a battery in a scooter ignited in his garage, possibly due to a recent accident. (KPTV.com)
- Troy Shinn reports on the situation surrounding the death of Bryce Bybee, 23, who died in custody of the Washington County Jail on April 17. Officials say Bybee wasn't supposed to be at the jail at all. In fact, Bybee was set to be admitted to the Oregon State Hospital (OSH) by April 15. Bybee's transfer was delayed because of a backlog, which was possibly exacerbated by a number of reasons, including a lack of evaluators to release him to the hospital and an overabundance of inmates from Washington County already at OSH. - Firefighters responded to a Beaverton house fire in the 1100 block of Cindy Street on Monday afternoon. Responders reported no injuries and had the fire under control by 3:26 p.m. The cause remains unknown. (Twitter)
- A new affordable housing development broke ground in Beaverton on Wednesday, July 6. The project, known as Wishcamper, will feature 135 affordable homes, including 84 for seniors, near Mountainside High School. It's set for completion in 2024. (Metro newsfeed)
