Here are the top stories in Beaverton today:

  1. A Beaverton man was sentenced to 375 months for multiple sex crimes on July 6. The victim came forward in 2015, revealing to a friend that Luis Hernandez-Sanchez, 53, had been abusing her over multiple years. A jury found Hernandez-Sanchez guilty on July 1. (KATU)
  2. Dozens of car enthusiasts met up at a local 7-Eleven on July 11, spurring rumors of street racing and street takeovers. Washington County deputies wanted to clarify the situation, however: The gathering near Southwest Murray Boulevard and Millikan Way was a mainly peaceful opportunity for owners to show off their vehicles. A few warnings were issued, deputies admit, but the event remained uneventful and safe for the most part. (KGW.com)
  3. A handful of Beaverton schools are getting some touch-ups over the summer, Christine Pitanawich reports. A number of elementary schools are being modified from 'open floorplans' to improve noise levels and add security. Other projects include HVAC and roof work and new flooring. (KGW.com)
  4. Caspian Kabob, recently opened in the new West End District development, made OregonLive's list of "22 new restaurants to know for summer 2022." The eatery formerly occupied a cart at the Prost pod in North Portland. It's acclaimed for its Persian-style grilled meat kebabs and saffron rice.
  5. Get a closer look at the Waterhouse Trail gap on Bethany Boulevard with local bicycle advocate Tina Ricks and BikePortland's Jonathan Maus. The gap is under a mile, separating two sections of the Waterhouse Trail and forcing cyclists onto busy roadways when crossing Highway 26 in the Bethany neighborhood. Regional agencies plan to build a multi-use pathway over the highway about a mile east, but construction isn't likely to begin for several years.
