Here are the top five stories today in Beaverton:
- There was a somber undercurrent when community members gathered for a car show Sunday. The event was an opportunity for folks to appreciate cars of all sorts, but it was also the 11th annual Kyron's Car Show, raising awareness for the young boy who disappeared from Northwest Portland over 12 years ago. Kyron Horman would be 20 years old this year, and his parents haven't given up hope of finding closure. Find out what they're doing to keep Kryon alive in people's minds and to help other parents avoid such a catastrophic loss at KATU.
- One of the region's largest construction companies is relocating its offices from The Pearl District to Beaverton. J.E. Dunn Construction announced earlier this week that it will be moving to the Nimbus Corporate Center at 8910 S.W. Gemini Dr. Company reps explained that they intend the move to help "accommodate company growth and provide easier access to its projects in the region." (The Business Journals, subscription)
- Get excited! Portland Cider's Westside Pub opens up on Wednesday. Co-owner Jeff Parrish said he wants the new pub to be a "third space" for his guests — a place to relax and hang out while snagging a refreshing beverage. The Westside Pub is located at 4005 S.W. Orbit St., within the new West End District on the corner of Southwest Murray Boulevard and Tualatin Valley Highway. (Pamplin, subscription)
- If you've been beating the heat by heading to Wilson Pool this summer, you might need to change what you type in the GPS to get there in the near future. Courtney Vaughn reports that Portland Parks & Recreation is inviting the public to help rename the pool adjacent to the former Woodrow Wilson High School, now Ida B. Wells High school. The agency is also looking for ideas to rename Custer Park in Southwest Portland. Click over to Portland Parks & Recreation's website to cast your vote. (Portland Tribune)
- Hillsboro's Laika has brought us a number of well-known whimsical and quirky films, such as "The Boxtrolls," "Coraline" and "Kubo." What many people don't realize is that Laika is an iteration of the studio responsible for The California Raisins, Michael Jackson's "Speed Demon" and an array of other iconic 1980s Claymation productions. Find out the journey that led to Will Vinton Studios becoming Laika via OregonLive and a documentary called "Claydream," which premieres at Cinema 21 Friday.
Today in Beaverton:
- Regal Evergreen Parkway in the Tanasbourne area offers $2 family movies every Tuesday and Wednesday for the first showing of the day. Today's film is "How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World." (Noon)
- Book Chat Happy Hour - Beaverton City Library welcomes book lovers to chat together via Zoom about what you're reading and what's on your to-be-read list. (5 p.m.)
- Tuesday's are for trivia! This week, test your knowledge of the MARVEL Universe at KingPins Beaverton. Teams of two to eight players are invited to join the free session. All ages are welcome. (7-9 p.m.)
From my notebook:
- It might seem like summer just began, but it's almost time to register for THPRD's Fall classes! In-district registration opens at 8 a.m. on August 13. (Twitter)
- Looking for your next Happy Hour location? Choza Beaverton is set to open this week (rumor has it that it already has!) Head over to the new Murrayhill location at 14625 S.W. Teal Blvd. for boozy margaritas, authentic tacos, fresh decor and everything else you could hope for from a modern cantina restaurant. (Instagram)
Now you're in the loop and ready to start this Tuesday off right! I'm off to schedule my next margarita night. I'll be in your inbox tomorrow morning with another update.
