Here are the top stories today in Beaverton and nearby communities:

  1. A Hillsboro man was sentenced to federal prison yesterday for stealing hundreds of pieces of residential mail throughout the Portland Metropolitan Area, including Beaverton. Dwayne Leroy Daan, 42, stole more than 800 pieces of mail from residences across multiple towns in early 2020, and used the personal identity of one local resident to purchase a luxury car. Daan was sentenced to 90 months in federal prison and three years supervised release. (U.S. Department of Justice)
  2. The Beaverton electric school bus fleet will be growing thanks to a PGE grant. Six area school districts, Beaverton, Hillsboro, Portland, Gresham-Barlow, Centennial, and Salem-Keizer were chosen by PGE to receive the grants from the company's Electric School Bus Fund. The grants will provide the districts with enough additional money to get an electric bus and install charging stations. (Beaverton Patch)
  3. The Federal Transit Administration has awarded a $99.9 million construction grant to the Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon. The grant will be for its 7.8-mile MAX Red Line extension project in the Portland metro area, dubbed "A Better Red." The project will expand MAX Red Line service west, helping to link Beaverton, Portland International Airport and the Gateway Transit Center, and providing a one-seat ride from Hillsboro to the airport. (RailwayAge Magazine)
  4. Former Beaverton lawmaker, Tobias Read, has announced his bid for governor. The announcement came early Monday morning in a campaign video highlighting his personal stake in the COVID-19 pandemic as not only a politician but a father. Read joins House Speaker Tina Kotek, Yamhill County Commissioner Casey Kulla, and former Independent gubernatorial candidate Patrick Starnes as other names in the 2022 Democratic primary race. 5. The city has restriped the bikeway at a busy SW Bertha, Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway intersection in an attempt to finally bring clarity to the tricky location. The area has seen many crashes over the years, and the Portland Bureau of Transportation is seeking to significantly improve the safety and comfort of bicycle riders going eastbound on Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway. The changes have been completed, but the new configuration has caused some confusion for drivers and may take some getting used to. (BikePortland.org)
