Here are the top five stories today in Beaverton:
- Monkeypox has arrived in Washington County. Two cases of the disease, officially known as hMPXV, were identified Thursday morning. Though the virus is not as transmissible as COVID-19, Dr. Tim Menza, a senior health advisor with the Oregon Health Authority, advises avoiding high-risk behaviors. Such behaviors include skin-to-skin or mouth-to-mouth contact or sharing bedding/towels with an infected individual. There is a vaccination available; however, there are less than 200 doses available in Oregon at this time. (OPB)
- The Westside featured prominently in this week's Oregon Brews and News newsletter from Andre Meunier. Steeplejack Brewing opened its Hillsboro tasting room, featuring an indoor fire pit and food cart — in addition to tasty beers. Also from our side of the metro area, Oyatsupan's collab brew with Three Mugs Brewing, Baker’s Golden Ale, garnered Beer of the Week. The beer is made from trimmings from the lauded Beaverton bakery's Japanese milk bread. (OregonLive)
- Find out what's coming up at the Patricia Reser Center with an overview of the facility's official lineup for its inaugural season from Executive Director Chris Ayzoukian. The Reser will offer expanded family programming, which will include a bilingual version of "Cinderella," plenty of performances from local artists and even a visiting group from Afghanistan. Ayzoukian emphasized the organization's efforts to represent Beaverton's diversity in its programming. Tickets for the season's shows went on sale Thursday morning. (KOIN.com)
- Local reporter Kohr Harlan visited the Washington Square Mall for National Fried Chicken Day on Wednesday. Click over to the segment to learn more about Ezell's Fried Chicken. Beyond chicken, the eatery offers some spectacular-looking sides, including scratch-made biscuits, real mashed potatoes and gravy ("made with love") and beautiful peach cobbler. (KOIN.com)
- Washington County's controversial ban on flavored tobacco is facing another hurdle. Washington County Circuit Court Judge Andrew Erwin paused the ban on Tuesday, which was initially passed by the Washington County Commissioners in November 2021 and subsequently confirmed by voters. Judge Erwin made the decision following a county attorney admitting that the county had no plan in place to enforce the ban. (OregonLive, subscription)

Are you a Beaverton resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?
Bloomberg recently asked experts where they’d invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.
Thinking you can’t afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.
Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here’s why:
- Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
- Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
- Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)
