Good morning, Beaverton. I'm joined by the incomparable Merlin Douglass today in a collaborative edition this warm morning to tell you everything you need to know about what's going on in town.

Here are the top five stories today in Beaverton:

  1. Residents in the West Haven-Sylvan neighborhood were told to shelter in place on Wednesday as police and crisis workers endeavored to negotiate with an armed man on a rooftop in that area. Sally Segar reports that police were attempting to serve a warrant related to a domestic violence incident for Eric Lane, 36, when he climbed onto the roof of the Sylvan Heights Condominiums and threatened to kill himself. Around 11:40 p.m. — nearly seven hours after climbing onto the rooftop — Lane peacefully surrendered to police. (Beaverton Valley Times, subscription)
  2. Exterro, the Beaverton-based legal software company founded in 2008, announced that increased investment has driven the company’s value to above a billion dollars. Mark your financial calendars: CEO Bobby Balachandran says he might take the company public next year. (OregonLive; this story requires a subscription)
  3. TriMet construction work is scheduled to shut down the MAX Red Line both Saturday and Sunday, so you may need to adjust your travel plans. The work is part of the agency's "A Better Red" project, which is part of efforts to improve efficiency, accessibility and reliability of public transit throughout the Metro area. Blue Line trains will be available for service from Gresham to Beaverton both days. (OregonLive)
  4. Beaverton's Mayor Lacey Beaty — the city's first female mayor — earned another "first" this week. Mayor Beaty was the first Beaverton mayor ever invited to the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative. At the week-long event, Harvard experts gave mayors from nine different countries ideas and practical suggestions for coping with complex civic problems. Her education will continue remotely for the rest of the year, with occasional opportunities for increased engagement and participation. (Beaverton Valley Times, subscription)
  5. Many are suffering from the heat this week, especially those who work outdoors. With high temperatures in mind, the Beaverton Farmers Market folks have given vendors the option to stay home Saturday. The organization plans on updating its interactive map to indicate which vendors will be closed so that shoppers can plan their trip accordingly. In other market news, Fraga Farmstead Creamery's gelato made from goat milk and fresh Hermiston watermelons will be on hand to help you stay cool through the weekend.
