Here are the top stories today in Beaverton:

  1. For Beaverton families who are unable to afford school supplies, the KGW School Supply Drive has made a positive impact. Southridge High School Principal David Nieslanik calls the program "a savior." Donations to the program also help teachers, who often have tight budgets for classroom essentials. (KGW.com)
  2. Some of Beaverton's most elite runners are destined for a move. Coach Jerry Schumacher's Bowerman Track Club, a Nike project, is taking his talents to Eugene in the upcoming months. The move means fewer chance-encounters with Olympic greats along local Beaverton trails for the local running community but enables Schumacher to serve as Head Coach for U of O's track and cross country programs. (OregonLive)
  3. A new recovery center is headed to the Bethany area. The Union Gospel Mission, a charitable organization founded in the 1920s and dedicated to helping those experiencing homelessness, recently received a $3 million grant to help fund a recovery center north of Highway 26. The facility for women and children will open on the 2.5-acre site at Northwest 185th Avenue and Rock Creek Boulevard with 52 rooms, childcare and other resources. (Pamplin Media Group)
  4. Learn how the City of Beaverton's business recovery grants benefited businesses all over the city in an article from last month. In response to the pandemic, Mayor Beaty and other members of the city government worked to distribute over $6 million to more than 500 local businesses. The city used focus groups and outreach to determine which businesses were most vulnerable and deserving of the grants. (City of Beaverton's Community Development Department)
  5. Were you among the many who made it to the Washington County Fair over the weekend? See the highlights in a slideshow from The Times.
