Here are the top stories today in Beaverton:
- It's great to live in Washington County this summer, thanks in part to the abundance of things to do. First off, starting today, we have the free-to-enter Washington County Fair. It's a perfect opportunity to grab some fair food, marvel at the farm animals and snag some quirky fun. Saturday, there's also a chance for tours of PCC Rock Creek's teaching garden at the school's Invertebrates, Wildlife & Us event (free and open to the public). There are lots of events coming to the Westside in the upcoming week, so be sure to check out the complete list at the OregonLive article from Rosemarie Stein.
- Writer Dennis Peck visited the Kennedy Community Garden in Beaverton, located in the Raleigh West area, to discuss the challenges facing gardeners this year due to the atypical weather. "This year has been terrible," commented one community gardener. OSU Extension horticulturist Brooke Edmunds explained the situation: Heavy rains, a bizarre April snow and cold nights stunted crops and gardens throughout the region and left Oregon around "17 days behind a 'normal' year" in terms of heat units. - Get the lowdown on Binary Brewing's now-open pub and production facility in Beaverton's Bakery Block from writer Andi Prewitt of the Willamette Week. Binary got its start as part of Uptown Beer, but popularity drove the brand's decision to expand in 2021. The new space offers a view of the brewing facility, vintage tile floors (a nod to the building's vintage roots) and eats from the onsite Megabits Food for Humans.
- The City of Beaverton offered a general update by means of a string of tweets on Thursday. Highlights of the releases include the decision to instate John Dugger in Council Position 5 after Marc San Soucie retires from the council on August 31. Dugger was elected to Position 5, but his term was not supposed to begin until January 2023. On a more fun note, city staff announced this year's Flicks by the Fountain movie selection: "Encanto" will show at Beaverton City Park on August 26. - Scope out five of the latest homes for sale in the Beaverton area in a roundup from Beaverton Patch. A cute (and large!) home in the Sexton Mountain area is on offer for under $700,000, a three-bedroom condo awaits near Oak Hills for around $300,000 and a beautiful yard (belonging to an upscale family home in Bethany) sits ready for a barbecue at under $900,000.

- Looking for a(nother) new place to enjoy your beverage of choice? Skywater Fine Wines in downtown Hillsboro recently hosted its ribbon-cutting ceremony. The drinkery, located on Fourth and Main, comes to Washington County from two Portland transplants who were looking for a "small town feel." Get the lowdown at OregonLive.
