22 Tickets, 1 Arrest During Gresham Police Safety Operation
The Gresham Police Department will conduct more pedestrian safety missions during the summer and leading up to the start of school.

GRESHAM, OR — Officers issued more than 20 tickets and made one arrest during the 4-hour pedestrian safety operation in Gresham on Wednesday.
According to the Gresham Police Department, officers setup along Southeast Stark Street, near Southeast 194th Avenue, between 3 and 7 p.m. May 30 to conduct targeted enforcement of pedestrian safety laws.
During the operation, officers reportedly ticketed 22 drivers and arrested one person.

"Education for drivers and pedestrians is vital to keeping our roads safe," Gresham police spokesman Scott McFarland said in a statement Thursday. "Motorists must stop and yield to pedestrians who are waiting to cross, or who are in the process of crossing, the roadway. Motorists are also required to stop at all crosswalks when a vehicle is already stopped in a lane next to the one they are traveling in."
More pedestrian safety awareness operations will be conducted during the summer and in September to further drive home the department's mission — for both drivers and pedestrians who might not be aware of their responsibilities as well.

For anyone curious about what those laws are before getting pulled over, McFarland suggested reading up on Oregon Revised Statute (ORS) 811.028 for specifics on the law regarding drivers, and ORS Chapter 814 for laws pertaining to pedestrians.
