Driver, Pedestrian Safety Operation In Gresham This Week: Police

Police will watch for both unsafe driving and pedestrian habits during a traffic safety operation at an intersection on Highway 26.

GRESHAM, OR — Drivers and pedestrians in Gresham have been warned: Gresham police will conduct a pedestrian safety operation this week to educate the community and enforce right-of-way laws in the city.

The operation will take place at the intersection of East Powell Boulevard and Northeast Liberty Avenue between 3 and 7 p.m. June 20. Warning signs notifying folks they're entering the safety operation zone will be posted in the area.

According to Gresham police officials, interested residents can check out the Oregon Revised Statute regarding driver and pedestrian laws for more information — specifically, ORS 811.028, failure to stop and remain stopped for a pedestrian, and ORS Chapter 814, for laws pertaining to pedestrians.

"Pedestrian safety education is vital to keeping our roads safe," Gresham police officials said in a statement. "Motorists must stop and yield to pedestrians who are waiting to cross, or who are already crossing the roadway. Motorists are also required to stop at all crosswalks when there is a vehicle already stopped in a lane next to the lane they are traveling in."

This is one of many traffic safety operations the department will reportedly conduct this summer.
