Man Who Fired Into Gresham Home Convicted Of Attempted Murder

The jury needed less than one day to convict Jorge Beltran of three counts of attempted murder. He had fired shots into a home in Gresham.

PORTLAND, OR – It look less than a day for a jury in Multnomah County to convict Jorge Beltran of three counts of attempted murder. The charges stemmed from an incident last October when Beltran stood outside a home on the 2100 block of Southeast 185th Avenue in Gresham and fired shots into a bedroom.

Prosecutors told the jury that inside the bedroom, three teens – ages 16, 17, and 18 – were sitting and watching SpongeBob SquarePants when five bullets entered the room. None of the teens were injured in the shooting.

The jury was told that before the shooting, Beltran, 26, had entered the home where he got into an altercation with the 16-year-old. The other two teens had then chased Beltran from the home. He then returned with a gun.

"He's not there, as he started, to brandish his firearm in a show of force and do nothing with it," Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney Nicole Hermann told the jury. "He's not there firing shots into the air. He's there targeting his shots into a home and a bedroom.

"Mr. Beltran acted with a conscious objective to take a substantial step towards causing the death of each of those three people."

Beltran will be sentenced on October 5.
