Hillsboro Standoff Ends When Man Takes Own Life, Police Say

Hillsboro police say that a hostage situation ended when a man took his life.

HILLSBORO, OR — A 12-hour standoff with a person who refused to leave a home ended when the man, who was accused of taking several people hostage, took his own life, according to Hillsboro police. The area reopened just after 8 a.m.

Police on Tuesday evening were called to an apartment at SE 45th Avenue and Tualatin Valley Highway to investigate a report of an attempted suicide.

A man entered an apartment saying that he wasn't going back to jail, police said. The man refused to let the people in the apartment – with whom he has a relationship – leave, according to police.

After about two hours of negotiations, the man released the hostages but still refused to leave the apartment, police said. He was found dead inside about ten hours later.
