HILLSBORO, OR —Making holiday wreaths, foraging for mushrooms, Minecraft and Fortnite come to life. All are among the events taking place at the Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve in Hillsboro in the next two weeks.

The 635-acre wetlands area is located along the Tualatin River. The address is 2600 SW Hillsboro Highway.

Minecraft Madness

When: 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday

Where: JBW Classroom

What: Do you like Minecraft? Have you spent time building worlds online? Join Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve as they meld the survival and creative concepts of Minecraft. Collect your supplies and build your own structures to withstand the tests of natural disasters.

Ages: 8 through 14 years

Cost: $15.00 (Resident), $20.00 (Non-resident)

Introduction to Foraging: Surviving Outdoors

When: Part 1: 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Part 2: 10 a.m. to noon on Dec. 11

Where: JBW - Off-site location 1

What: Foraging, or the search for wild food resources, has played an integral role in survival for countless species. Join Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve in this two part series where we will learn the basics of foraging and plant identification (part 1) and then learn the basics of ethnobotany and how native plants can aid in outdoor survival (part 2).

Ages: 16 years through Adult

Cost: Fee for 18 up to 61 years old (Resident): $17.00

Fee for 18 up to 61 years old (Non-resident): $22.00

Wetlands Exploration Days: Ducks

When: 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday

What: Ducks love Jackson Bottom at this time of year! More water means more space for them to find the food and shelter they need to survive and be ready for spring.

Cost: Free

SENSE-ational Craft Time: Salt Painting

When: 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 10

Where: JBW Classroom

What: Get creative with projects designed to engage sensory inputs.

Ages: All ages, though craft participants must pre-register, and an adult/guardian must attend with children.

Cost: $5 registration fee is due at time of sign up, and parents/guardians attend for free.

Fortnite Nature Survival

When: 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 11

Where: JBW Classroom

What: Do you play Fortnite? Do you think you have what it takes to survive? Join Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve as they meld science and the survival concepts of Fortnite. Scavenge for resources and see if you have what it takes to survive.

Wreath Making

What: Have you been looking for an opportunity to make a seasonal wreath out of natural materials? Join Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve staff and volunteers for a wreath making class and take home your very own 10' wreath.
