WashCo Man Charged With Patricide: Sheriff

Shaun Maki allegedly beat his 77-year-old father with a wooden shovel handle. Melvin Maki died from those injuries roughly 3 months later.

HILLSBORO, OR — For allegedly beating his 77-year-old father to death with a wooden shovel handle, a 53-year-old Washington County man has been indicted for murder.

Shaun Edwin Maki reportedly called Washington County deputies on the afternoon of March 2 to report his father, Melvin Maki, was suffering from self-inflicted injuries at their mutual home in the 7200-block of Northwest 185th Avenue, north of Hillsboro's Rock Creek area in unincorporated Washington County.

Responding deputies, after seeing Melvin, reported the injuries they observed were not likely self-inflicted at all. Melvin was taken to hospital, where he remained in critical condition until his death June 4.

Shaun, however, was arrested March 3; on March 12 he was charged with a various assortment of crimes related to the assault of his father.

More than one month after Melvin's death, on July 18, Shaun — a former project manager and business consultant — was officially charged with murder. He will be prosecuted in a Washington County court.
