Dramatic Rescue of Exhausted Swimmers by River Patrol

Swimmers were struggling in the waters off Dahl Beach where the Clackamas River meets the mouth of the Willamette.

The call to 911 said there was a woman without a life jacket struggling to stay afloat in the waters off Dahl Beach where the Clackamas River meets the mouth of the Willamette.

The caller said a woman had called to friends saying she couldn't go any further and was having slipping beneath the surface.

Two Clackamas County Sheriff's Office marine deputies sped to the scene where they found 22-year-old Angel Clyde struggling in the water.

They threw her a flotation device, grabbed her arm and pulled her into the boat.

The deputies then saw a second woman - later identified as a 16-year-old whose name is not being released - also in distress.

They maneuvered the boat over to a rock where the teen was struggling to hold on.

One deputy grabbed her arms and told her to climb on the boat.

She was too weak to do so.

The deputy pulled her by her wrists on to the boat.

The two women were brought to shore where they were met by medical personnel.

Both were cold and exhausted but otherwise uninjured.

The two told deputies they had been trying to swim across the river but grew too tired to continue.

The sheriff's office says the incident is a reminder to be careful.

"The water is colder than you think," the sheriff's office said in a statement. "Underestimating river temperature has led to several tragic drownings on county waterways in recent years.

"Don't let poor judgment turn you into a sad statistic."
