Neighborhood Nonprofit Spotlight: Community Orchestra of Central Oregon

Community Orchestra of Central Oregon shares its story with Patch.

Patch talks to Community Orchestra of Central Oregon (COCO) about its inclusive approach to making music in Oregon.

Patch: Tell Patch a little bit about your organization!

COCO: Our non-profit is two years old with our orchestra starting its third concert season. Auditions are not required as we welcome all musicians. While the emphasis is on having fun, we have a professional conductor who is helping all of us hone our skills. We currently practice Wednesday nights at the Cascade Middle School. We have a Spring and Fall concert schedule plus a Holiday concert at the Bend Senior Center. 541-306-6768 for more information.

COCO: We are filling a niche for intermediate players who wish to have the experience of playing in a full orchestra. Our music is selected with a general audience in mind. We have had smaller ensembles provide music in assisted living homes and in support of other community fund-raising events. We are developing an internship program that we hope will be a resource to students of our local community college. We maintain a scholarship program so that participation is open to any income level and our concerts are free of charge.

Patch: What is the biggest struggle your organization faces?

COCO: Stabilizing our numbers and developing broad-based financial support. We are still in an infancy stage of development as an organization and face all the challenges a new business might face.
