Spitzer replaces Kyle Laier, who has been acting superintendent since last July when he took over for Larry Didway, who left for another job.

She has spent her entire career in Hillsboro, where she started in 1993 as a teacher. She worked her way up, becoming a principal and later a mentor to younger teachers. In 2011, she became the executive director of elementary schools, a position she held until 2015, when she became assistant superintendent.

"I am excited to be joining the rich community of Oregon City," Spitzer said in a statement. "In the next few months I look forward to talking with students, parents, staff and community members and learning more about what you see as strengths in the district and hopes for the future.

"This summer I will be out and about and am eager to meet you!"

While she grew up in Oregon City, Spitzer went to West Linn High School. Last year, she earned a doctorate in education for the University of Oregon.

She was one of three finalists for the job but the only local one. One was from Minneapolis, and one was from Houston.

The school district posted the video of Spitzer's interview with the school board for the public to watch.
