Oregon Celebrates Indigenous People's Day: What's Open, Closed

Oregon is celebrating Indigenous People's Day for the first time on Monday.

OREGON CITY, OR —Monday is Indigenous People's Day in Oregon, the first time the state is marking the day officially. The day is meant to replace Columbus Day, which was never much of a holiday in Oregon.

The state legislature overwhelmingly approved using the second Monday of October to mark the holiday. Oregon became the 13th state to make the change from Columbus Day.

While the approval was bipartisan and nearly unanimous, the designation doesn't change a lot as far as the state is concerned. Most closures on Monday will be on the federal level.

Post offices will be closed as will most – but not all banks. All federal offices and the courts will be closed as will some of the tribal offices across the state and the Native American Youth and Family Center.

The only state office closing is the Department of Environmental Quality's vehicle emission test centers.

All other state offices will be open as will the county offices in Clackamas, Multnomah, and Washington counties. State courts in those counties will also be open.

Last year's census reported there are 129,081 Oregonians who identify as at least partially native American. The federal government recognizes nine tribes in Oregon:
