Here are the top three stories today in Salem:
- The Salem City Council will be reviewing a proposed code amendment that will eliminate minimum off-street parking space requirements for businesses and buildings during the council's meeting today. As part of the review, the council will vote to determine if the code should move forward to the next stage of a public hearing. The proposed code aims to give the city more flexibility in reforming parking codes and is part of the city's Climate Action Plan. (Statesman Journal)
- Oregon lawmakers in Salem are looking at a proposed bill that would require climate change lessons in the state's K-12 public school curricula. If the bill passes, then Oregon would become the second state in the U.S. to have such a mandate; currently, Connecticut is the only state that requires climate change instruction in schools. (News10NBC)
- The Oregon legislature is currently reviewing a proposal that would increase the minimum age to purchase and possess a gun from 18 to 21. The law would make exceptions to transferring a firearm to someone under the age of 21 if that person is a police officer, certified reserve officer, reserve officer, or active or reserve member of the military. House Bill 2006 was first read at the end of February and recently made it to the Judiciary at the beginning of March. (KDRV)
