Here are the top three stories today in Salem:

  1. Gov. Tina Kotek said no to the proposal of a new tribal casino in northeast Salem near I-5. Despite the veto by the governor, the Confederated Tribes of the Siletz Indians said they will not give up on the project. (Subscription: Salem Reporter)
  2. According to a recently released annual analysis of the use of force by police, Salem police arrest numbers have significantly dropped since 2020. But the report also showed Salem officers used force against people younger than 16 years old about 50 percent more in 2022, with 31 incidents, compared to 15 incidents in 2021. Use of force by Salem police went down or was stable with other age groups from 2021 to 2022. (Subscription: Salem Reporter)
  3. Salem Police Department's Salem Police Traffic Team has been focusing on enforcing citations for distracted driving. Traffic officers issued 27 citations for unlawful use of a mobile communications device, 11 for speeding, four for not using a seat belt, and five miscellaneous violations, and they also issued 62 warnings in just two afternoons last week in downtown Salem.
