1. Crews respond to Saturday blaze on Riviera Court in Springfield; one fatality reported (kval.com) — A weekend house fire on Riviera Court in Springfield left one person dead after Eugene Springfield Fire crews pulled a victim from a burning garage and rushed them to Riverbend, where they later died. Firefighters contained the blaze to the garage, and no one else was injured. The fire’s cause remains under investigation, and trauma counselors assisted the victim’s family at the scene.
   

2. Dramatic decrease in tipping fees endangers CleanLane project (registerguard.com) — Springfield residents are paying higher garbage rates than Eugene customers while their hauler, Sanipac, is accused of not forwarding required county system benefit fees that help fund landfill operations and the CleanLane project. Lane County commissioners will vote on moving the CleanLane waste-recovery facility to Short Mountain and updating methane-capture contracts as the county confronts a sharp drop in landfill tonnage and a strained waste management budget.
   

3. Man arrested after causing disturbance at Shedd Institute, damaging sound equipment (kval.com) — A man who allegedly damaged sound equipment and caused a disturbance at Eugene’s Shedd Institute was later booked into Lane County Jail by Springfield Police in connection with a different case. Eugene officers then added charges including criminal mischief, trespass, and disorderly conduct. The incident highlights ongoing cooperation between Springfield and Eugene law enforcement.
   

4. Eugene PD arrests man for DUII after truck crashes into trees, fence on Green Acres Road (kval.com) — A late-night crash on Green Acres Road in Eugene led to a DUII arrest after a pickup hit trees, a crosswalk sign, and a residential fence. Eugene Springfield Fire evaluated the driver before he was taken to Eugene Police headquarters and then lodged at Lane County Jail on multiple charges, including DUII, reckless driving, and resisting arrest.
   

5. For religion and tradition, man takes to flooded Southwest Washington river seeking benefits of cold water immersion (chronline.com) — A man who has practiced cold water plunges in natural waters around Eugene and Springfield recently continued his ritual in a flooded river in Southwest Washington. He describes the spiritual and mental benefits he finds in these icy immersions, blending his Navajo heritage with his Christian faith while settling into his new community.
