📰 News we're reading

1. Oppenlander park development likely to require ballot measure (westlinntidings.com) — West Linn leaders are eyeing a November 2026 bond measure to help buy and develop 1.2 acres of the Oppenlander property into a city park, after earlier talks with the school district collapsed. With no current funding for purchase, development, or maintenance, councilors are weighing options between ball fields or a more passive park while residents strongly favor preserving the grove of trees.

2. The Final 15 (slj.com) — A part-time youth librarian at the West Linn Public Library, Steven Engelfried, has helped select the 15 books for the 2026 Heavy Medal Mock Newbery reading and discussion list. He and colleague Emily weighed nominations, reader polls, and genre balance to finalize the titles, plus chose DEATH IN THE JUNGLE for a warm-up discussion. Local children’s lit fans can follow the blog’s late-December schedule to read along and join the conversation.

3. OSAA flips decision, approves new classification system with 6A/5A hybrid leagues (oregonlive.com) — West Linn High School will stay in the Three Rivers League under a newly approved OSAA classification plan for 2026–30, keeping it grouped with nearby large schools like Lake Oswego and Tigard. The statewide shake-up mainly affects 6A and 5A schools, including a revived Midwestern Hybrid League, while smaller-school leagues remain mostly unchanged as football-specific details are still being finalized.

4. Wilsonville man indicted after incident involving sheriff's deputies (wilsonvillespokesman.com) — West Linn Police are helping lead the investigation into a Wilsonville man who was shot by Clackamas County deputies after allegedly charging them with an axe and has now been indicted on multiple felony and misdemeanor charges. A grand jury ruled the deputies’ use of force justified, and the suspect will be jailed after he’s released from the hospital.
