Volunteer Firefighter Dies Of Injuries In Oregon Barn Fire

Firefighters were battling a large barn fire in St. Paul, Oregon. A firefighter was critically hurt. He did not survive.

ST. PAUL, OR — A 30-year-old firefighter died Thursday battling a large barn fire in St. Paul, Oregon.

Austin Smith of St. Paul was critically hurt in the blaze, which ignited on Champoeg Creek Lane NE, authorities said.

"This is a tragic loss for our community and family. We are all heartbroken over this loss," St. Paul Fire District Chief Bryan Lee said. "We are all heartbroken over this loss.

"We appreciate the support from the community and public safety partners during this difficult time."

Firefighters from St. Paul and other departments were sent to the barn blaze around 4 a.m., Lee said. The barn was in flames when they arrived, and firefighters began "defensive firefighting operations."

Soon after, a Smith was severely injured and paramedics treated him. He was airlifted to a hospital, but did not survive.

Lee said Austin, who joined the fire department as a volunteer firefighter in early 2015, leaves behind a wife and extended family.

Investigators are waiting for safe building conditions, authorities said Thursday afternoon that. A cause of the blaze wasn't immediately determined, but is expected in the coming days.

Photos posted on social media appeared to show that the barn was destroyed.

Fox12 reported the blaze led to an explosion. Oregon State Police told KUNP arson detectives are investigating.

St. Paul is about 35 minutes south of Portland. The city has a population of about 460.
