Abington Flag Football Star Honored

Abington HS flag football player Maya Johnson was among numerous young women in the region honored for their efforts in the sport.

ABINGTON, PA — One of Abington High School's flag football stars was honored among peers by the Maxwell Football Club this weekend.

The club hosted its regional awards event on Sunday, presenting a slew of young women with the Mini Max Award.

Among the honorees was Abington's Maya Johnson.

She and others were among a group of women who are the first female players ever recognized by the 87-year-old club.

Maxwell honors football players at every level of competition, ranging from high school and college all the way up to the pros. The Mini Max awards specifically recognize flag football excellence.

  • Krista Quinn, Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School
  • Maya Johnson, Abington High School
  • Natalie Gordon, North Penn High School
  • Elaysha Vereen, Mastery High School of Camden
  • Casey Burden, Wissahickon High School
  • Nilah Thompson, Science Leadership Academy at Beeber
  • Ruth Duink, Academy at Palumbo
  • Alexis Sears, Cedar Creek High School

Abington Senior High School's first-ever girl's flag football team last year won the second annual High School Girls Flag Football Championships in their inaugrual season.

Led by coach Melissa Brizzell, Abington inaugural team had a perfect 8-0 season going into the championships.

The team's final two wins of the regular season were against Archbishop Wood, 43-34, and North Penn, 34-12.

The league is sponsored by the Philadelphia Eagles and aims to empower female athletes and encourage broader flag football participation across the Greater Philadelphia area.
