ABINGTON, PA — Local environmental advocates are seeking community input on an environmental measure designed to cut down on plastic bag use in the township.

The Abington Environmental Advisory Council is circulating a survey among community members seeking input on the initiative, which would help cut down on single-use plastic bag waste, something that officials say has a detrimental effect on the environment.

The survey describes single-use plastic bags as those bags used to deliver/carry items from a retail establishment by a customer.

Exceptions to any possible plastic bag ban or controlled effort would include those plastic bags used in grocery stores to package certain foods like produce, nuts and candy; bags used to wrap poultry, meat and fish; bags used by pet stores to contain live animals such as fish or insects; and bags packaged at the time of manufacturing.

Abington residents and business owners who are interested in offering their feedback can visit this link to the survey.

The Abington survey comes just days before an April 1 enforcement deadline on a plastic bag ban in neighboring Philadelphia. The city's measure was passed back in 2019 but enforcement had been delayed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
