Dean Pushes for 'Open and Transparent' Process

Abington Commissioner and State Rep. Madeleine Dean, D-153, says goodbye … and asks the board to publicly seek candidates for her replacement.

Last night’s Abington Board of Commissioners meeting was rather brief, but there was an elephant in the room; it was addressed during closing comments.

The replacement

Dean said earlier this week that the board could have done a better job at finding Les Benzak’s successor. in May and the board appointed Benzak’s .

Dean took what appeared to be a jab at the board again.

“I wanted to say just briefly and respectfully a word about process,” Dean said last night. “As the board moves forward to fill my seat, I urge the board’s leadership in assuring that the process is as open and transparent as possible. I know some qualified people who are interested in serving …  and I suggest that the board publicly invite those who are interested in this important service to come forward to be interviewed by the board — to tell them ideas on why they are interested in working with us.”

Dean suggested the board interview candidates at the Sept. 5 public affairs committee meeting, adding that the board will likely nominate and appoint her successor at the Sept. 13 board meeting.

The goodbye

Dean said she enjoyed working with, and learning from the other commissioners during her stint as commissioner; she also praised the staff and the administration.

“I feel very lucky to have the honor to continue to serve and represent my neighbors in ward 7, as well as many others, as State Rep.,” Dean said. “And I am happy knowing one thing: You’re not done with me. I remain your neighbor, I remain your State Rep. — I’m across the street, and I hope I remain your friend.”
